Tuft and Needle Mattress

If you’re on the lookout for an all-foam solution that will fit your budget with plenty of room to spare while remaining comfortable to sleep on and good for your back, shoulders, and hips, look no further than this incredible Queen-sized mattress from Tuft & Needle.

The whole idea behind this brand when they first started was to create a comfortable mattress that does all the things you need it to do very well while cutting costs on those unnecessary details and embellishments other manufacturers use to make their product more ‘premium.’ We’re not saying there isn’t any value in those premium details, but there are some diminishing returns when it comes to bang for your buck.

The goal of the Tuft & Needle mattress is to provide pressure relief, cooling comfort, and optimal support for sleepers of all sizes, weights, and types. There are cheaper mattresses than this one on the list, but the Tuft & Needle manages to find the ‘Goldilocks zone’ of value, giving you the most for your money.

One of the secrets of this design lies in the company’s proprietary Adaptive foam, which feels comfy and lets you sink in just enough without making you feel like you’re trapped in quicksand. It also provides the right amount of support and pressure relief, thanks mainly to its thick and firm, supportive base. That’s all there is to it – two foam layers, comfort on top, support on the bottom, and it seems like that’s all it takes to make a great bed.

Zinus Mattress

Another excellent pick for anyone looking for the best bed under 1000 dollars, comes in the form of the Zinus Memory Foam mattress. This product comes in a variety of sizes, and we urge you to do your own thinking when it comes to the size you need.

If you need any help figuring out which size suits you best, make sure to check out our size comparison articles where we’ve dealt with explaining the pros and cons of each bed size. The Zinus mattress also features four different firmness levels based on thickness, ranging from 8’’ all the way up to 14’’, giving you even more options to choose from.

We reviewed the second-softest and second-tallest model – the 12’’ king. We wanted to see mainly whether the quality of the product matches its low price tag or whether it has more to offer than its cost would suggest. Given the fact that it has found its way onto this list, you would probably guess the latter, and you would be right. This product exceeded our every expectation, and we thought it was a particularly great choice for couples due to its thick top layer of memory foam.

At this thickness and size, the mattress is more than capable of isolating any motion, so you don’t have to worry about waking your partner if you need to get up for a midnight snack. Another great thing about this bed is the sheer number of options available in terms of firmness and size, so you should have no problem finding one that suits you.

Nectar Mattress

Since its launch back in 2017, Nectar has become one of the fastest-growing mattress brands in the United States. Their flagship mattress remains the crowning jewel of their offer, even though they have branched into selling adjustable foundations and bed frames as well.

This mattress comes in six sizes, namely, Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King in ascending order according to size. They all have the same construction, and the only difference between them is the width and length so you can decide on the size according to your needs and available room.

The bed consists of a breathable base that offers reliable support and a combination of thick memory foam layers to give you that viscous pressure relief feel. We tested the Queen version of the mattress to see how comfortable the bed actually is, focusing on its sinkage, motion isolation, firmness, and feel. There are three distinct layers to this bed that stack up to a profile with an 11’’ height.

One thing that sets the Nectar apart from other beds is its considerable amount of memory foam in the top layer – four inches to be exact, which allows for plenty of sinkage and body contouring.  In terms of feel and firmness, the mattress is quite responsive, interacting quite well through the top layer of memory foam and giving you plenty of contouring and allowing you to sink quite deep into the bed. The foams will envelop you quite a bit, especially if you’re on the heavy side, so keep that in mind.

Best Price Twin Mattress

You may consider memory foam mattresses to be quite a luxury, and with the price that most of them have, we wouldn’t blame you. However, there’s a new company on the bed-in-a-box scene that is trying to challenge that assumption by offering you an all-foam mattress for an unbelievably low cost.

It’s all in the name, really – Best Price, and it is the lowest-priced of all the mattresses on this list. Does that also mean that it has the lowest quality of all of them? Well yes, but we think the question isn’t if it can compete with mattresses that cost three, four or even five times more, but whether it can offer you a good value proposition and a good night’s sleep even though you’re on a tight budget.

There are air mattresses more expensive than this memory foam bed from Best Price. Let that sink in for a bit, no pun intended. In case this seems too good to be true, all you need to do is check out the massive amount of positive reviews this product has received on Amazon, where, at the moment of writing this review, it retains an average rating of 4.4 stars from over 7,000 customers.

If you’re looking for the fundamental experience of having good pressure relief and decent body contouring without any add-ons and fancy talk, this is the mattress for you.

Zinus Gel-Infused Green Tea Mattress

This is another budget-friendly option, priced only slightly higher than the previously-mentioned Best Price mattress. The Gel-Infused Green Tea Mattress from Zinus is the upgraded version of their standard green tea memory foam mattress

The manufacturer made a few exciting changes for this upgrade, the obvious one being that they replaced a layer of memory foam with gel-infused foam. If there’s anything we didn’t like about the regular Zinus model, it’s that it doesn’t do a great job at dispersing heat, so the fact that they decided to infuse some cooling gel into this upgraded model tells us that they are listening to their customers and giving us what we want, which always gets a massive ‘thumbs-up’ from us.

The options available for this mattress in terms of size are twin, full, queen, and king, and they each come in 6’’, 8’’, 10’’ or 12’’ thicknesses. The thickness you choose will affect the firmness of the mattress, ranging from firmest to plushiest, respectively.

The original Zinus was the best-selling all-foam mattress on Amazon for a while due to its excellent price and high quality, but the people at the company realized that they had to do something regarding temperature regulation, so they came up with this slightly more expensive upgraded version. The gel-infused Zinus is still very affordable, though, and it retains its quality in terms of contouring and pressure relief.

Sweetnight Queen Size Mattress

Sweetnight is a Chinese bedding company whose manufacturing arm is situated at Foshan – a city known as “Asia’s Furniture Factory.” The company’s mission is to allow people to sleep well and tackle the day ahead in their finest form – refreshed and rested. Sweetnight makes all kids of sleep-related products, but their mattresses are what caught people’s attention over in the West.

This bed is designed to give you the optimal sleep experience and increase your sleep quality. Weighing over 80 pounds, the 12’’ Queen-sized mattress sports CertiPUR-US Certified gel-infused memory foam for excellent temperature regulation and refreshing sleep.

Starting from the cover, the all-foam version of the SweetNight mattress has a polyester, breathable, thin sheet which further helps the bed and more importantly, the sleeper stays cool during the night. Heat dissipation is a huge selling point of SweetNight mattresses, and we’re happy to say that it works quite well here.

Since this is a flippable mattress, it has a firm and a soft side, so we’ll talk about the firm side first. This layer is formed of high-density polyfoam, which is situated right under the thin cover. Usually, you’d find this type of foam in the support core of a mattress but when it’s used as the comfort layer, it can help strict stomach or back sleepers find the right spinal alignment

When it comes to the soft side, there’s a layer of gel memory foam that you can feel respond to the pressure of your body and contour well. This side lets you sink deeper into the mattress, but the infused gel will draw heat away from your body keeping you cool.

Best Choice Products Dual-Layered Mattress

Another no-frills, affordable mattress that you can use for years comes from Best Choice Products in the form of their 10-inch Dual-Layered Memory Foam mattress. This is a popular mattress due to its no-nonsense nature and the fact that it has a reasonable price while doing what it needs to do very well.

For this price, things don’t get much better in the foam mattress world, and this is one of the highest-quality products you can expect to find at this price point. If you’re looking for a mattress that isn’t going to hurt your wallet but still offers a CertiPUR-US certified sleeping experience, this dual-layered 10’’ bed is the choice for you.

You can expect a decent level of quality from this mattress with the CertiPUR-US designation confirming that it meets all the highest standards with regards to manufacturing, and it doesn’t contain any harmful or toxic materials such as ozone depleters or heavy metals.

The top cover of the Best Choice is made of a cotton and polyester blend, which gives plenty of benefits, namely the fact that it can be removed and washed when necessary. It is also breathable and wicks moisture away from your body as you sleep.

When it comes to the comfort layer, it consists of 2.5 inches of memory foam, which moulds the mattress to your body shape. There’s plenty of support and comfort provided, giving you a good night’s sleep. Finally, the base support core layer is made of 7.5-inch thick high-density foam. It keeps your spine in alignment and relieves those nagging pressure-points around your body.

Zinus Ultima Comfort

The Ultima Comfort Mattress from Zinus combines an affordable price with premium features. This is what allowed it to become one of the best-selling, highest-rated mattresses out there. It comprises of a total of three layers, namely base support foam, a comfort foam, and memory foam.

It uses BioFoam, which is a specially designed type of foam that contains natural oils derived from plants, reducing petroleum-based content to a minimum in this environmentally-conscious, health-focused mattress. The mattress features CertiPUR-US-certified materials, meaning it has been tested and certified by the leading authority to determine it fulfils the criteria for environmental protection, physical performance as well as indoor emissions. The BioFoam technology Zinus used for this mattress results in a more cooling mattress which prevents overheating that you usually experience with standard all-foam mattresses. The fresh smell is achieved through the addition of active charcoal and green tea extracts which add to the comfortable experience of using this bed.

We tested the 8-inch version of the Ultima Comfort, and it came rolled into a compact package designed for easy transport and carry. The mattress weighs about 30 pounds, so you and a friend or family member can easily pick it up and bring it to the bedroom for setting up. At that point, all you need to do is remove the packaging and watch it unfold into its final form. The people at Zinus suggest waiting for a full 48 hours before use if you want the whole experience on your first night.

LUCID 10 Inch Queen Hybrid Mattress

LUCID is a company that has a lot of different models that are very affordable. This is one of their most popular models, so we were excited to jump in and give it a go.

First, let’s talk about what’s inside the LUCID 10’’ Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress. Starting with the cover, it is nice and soft, although pretty thin, so it’s not going to affect your overall feel of the mattress too much.

Moving on to the mattress proper, we have a memory foam layer on top, which is infused with bamboo charcoal to make it sleep cooler, and there are also some holes punched in the top layer of the mattress for extra breathability, which is a feature that you don’t often see in mattresses from other manufacturers.

Underneath the top layer, there’s another memory foam layer, as well as a transition layer, and finally a layer of steel coils. This means you’re going to get lots of support and pressure relief, which is precisely the combination most users are looking for from a memory-foam mattress.

You’re, of course, going to get the pressure relief from the memory foam layers on top, which are pretty soft and will conform quite well to the curves of your body. In the support core with the very firm coils, you’re going to get lots of support even if you’re on the heavy side. This is also going to be more breathable than your average memory foam mattress, so it’s a nice feel overall.

Zinus Cloud Memory

This bed which, as you might have noticed from the name, claims a cloud-like feel, offers three versions namely a 12-inch Premium, 10-inch Supreme and 8-inch Deluxe. Immediately you can see that the model designations don’t have much meaning to them since all three evoke a sense of luxury, but there are some differences to the models aside from the thickness and the name.

First of all, each layer in this Cloud series of mattresses plays a different role, and there are more than just two or three layers that you usually find on these kinds of beds. As usual, lower layers are there to offer rigidity and support, and the upper ones have the task of contouring and keeping your spine, shoulders, necks and hips aligned, as well as relieving the pressure points in your body.

The mattress is accommodating to all kinds of sleepers in terms of preferred positions as well as builds, making it one of the more versatile beds out there. Both lightweight and heavy persons will get just the right amount of sinkage and bounce.

The Zinus Cloud doesn’t feature a gel-infused cooling layer; however, it does manage to keep you cooler than most foam mattresses out there. There are few reports of overheating, so that doesn’t seem to be an issue with this bed. This mattress is made entirely in China, and that may be a problem for some shoppers.

Classic Brands Cool Gel Ventilated Gel Memory Foam

A bit on the firm side in terms of feel, this mattress works well for stomach sleepers and for back sleepers, that like a slightly firmer bed. This value-oriented mattress comes with a four-way stretch-knit cover which means that it’s got a pretty thin material between you and the comfort padding layer.

The top layer of this mattress is how it gets its name – the Cool Gel Memory Foam, which retains all of the benefits of regular memory foam. This means things like pressure relief and motion isolation between partners, so you’re not going to feel if your partner comes in and out of bed at night or if they toss and turn.

The Cool Gel, as its name suggests, offers cooling properties as well as some extra durability, since gel-infused mattresses tend to have a longer lifespan. Below that, there are two layers of polyfoam that works in conjunction with the core firm base of polyurethane as well, to give you deep support.

Since this is a complete foam mattress, it is adjustable-base friendly and all these foams are CertiPUR-US certified which means that the independent authority confirmed that these foams are made in an environmentally conscious way. So, if you’re interested in protecting the environment, this will be another reason to sleep well at night. Overall, this mattress is an excellent solution for anybody who is a back or stomach sleeper looking for a value-oriented bed.

Signature Design by Ashley Chime Express Hybrid Innerspring Mattress

You could say that this mattress is a mirror image of the previous one in terms of feel, meaning that it is also a middle-of-the-road mattress, but it leans a bit on the softer side. This means it would still be an excellent universal mattress if you’re not looking for something to be too firm or too soft.

Most of the comfort you’re going to get from this mattress comes from the inch-and-a-half of high-density polyfoam that’s in the top of this bed. Polyurethane-based foam is the industry standard today for providing good pressure point relief, and this mattress has foams that are all CertiPUR-US certified, meaning that they have either met or exceeded all of the industry standards today, so you can sleep while knowing that they are all certified and you’re going to receive good pressure-point relief from this bed.

The hallmark layer of this product is the gel memory foam. Ashley has taken a quarter-inch of this material and put it in the lumbar support area, which is going to be carrying the most weight, meaning that’s where you want most of the support.

The gel memory foam is an excellent material to use in this situation because it’s an upgrade from the usual polyurethane foam, making it more substantial, more durable as well as adding some new motion-isolation properties.

At the core of this mattress is an individually-wrapped coil system, which has a few benefits over a tied coil system, primarily the fact that it provides a more flexible and individualised sense of support.

Mattresses Under $1000 Buyer's Guide

Hopefully, this list has given you enough reason to believe that it isn’t necessary to spend more than $1000 to get a great memory foam mattress.

Comfort, reliability, and support can sometimes be achieved with a lot less, and a genuinely premium mattress is not hard to find in this price category. If you’re looking for an all-foam bed, you can expect to see some high-end memory-foam layers at this price point, and if you’re looking for an innerspring solution, you should make sure that the mattress has individually-wrapped coils.

Try to look for high-quality stitching as well, which will get your mattress to last a long time. The fact that there are best mattresses under 1000 dollars out there, is great for everyone who doesn’t want to spend a fortune on a new bed. Read carefully our buyer’s guide and reviews, so you can make an informed decision when buying the right model for you.

What Should People Look for in a Mattress Under 1000?

Support

When it comes to memory foam mattresses and the support they can provide, it’s all about the density. High-density memory foams offer more support, while lower density foams give less support. Therefore, mass equals support. Beds of the highest quality usually have the densest layer on top and bottom. The top layer is there to absorb your weight and give it an excellent distribution across the surface of the bed, while the bottom layer pushes your body up preventing it from sinking too deep into the mattress.

Firmness

Preferences related to mattress firmness are usually tied to two crucial factors – sleeper weight and preferred sleep position. To prevent too much sinkage, heavier sleepers often need firmer mattresses, while lighter individuals like to have a softer mattress to experience all the pressure relief and contouring it offers. Mind you this is a general rule and doesn’t apply in every single case.

In terms of sleep position, stomach and back sleepers tend to prefer firmer mattresses as they give their spine and hips the support they require, while side sleepers like softer mattresses which allow their shoulders to sink in keeping their body in a neutral position.

Durability

Mattresses are often quite expensive. Even if they are under $1000, they can still be quite a significant investment. This is why here at Sleep Bot we care deeply about the durability of the beds we recommend in our lists, and we urge you to do your own additional research regarding this particular category.

If you want your mattress to perform well during prolonged use, make sure to read some reviews from previous customers who have had some time with the product. You should look to get at least seven or eight years out of your mattress before you start noticing any significant deterioration.

Pressure Relief

Some mattresses do better than others when it comes to conforming to the sleeper’s body and keeping their spine in neutral alignment. This is what prevents pressure points from developing around your body, most commonly in the hips, lower back, shoulders and neck.

If you pick the right mattress for your body type, weight and preferred sleeping position, you should be OK, as long as the bed has a sufficient amount of quality, particularly in its upper layers. Models with latex or gel-infused comfort layers tend to do the best job, followed closely by models with an extra thick top layer.

Thickness

When it comes to high-quality mattresses, what we’d call a medium thickness is about 10 inches, though it does vary significantly from this number depending on different factors. Some beds are only 5’’ thick, and those are typically quite firm, while others can be upwards of 15’’ in which case they are most likely very soft and plushy.

Mattress thickness or height is often closely associated with its firmness level, so think about your preferences when choosing how thick you’d like your bed to be. Heavier people are often more comfortable on more abundant beds while lighter individuals tend to prefer thinner models.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation refers to the ability of a mattress to keep one side of the bed isolated from the other in terms of transfer of movement. What this means in practice is that the best mattress under $1000 should let you slip out of bed unnoticed, or toss and turn on your side while your partner remains sound asleep.

We’ve all experienced the pain of having to sleep on a mattress with lots of motion transfer where our partner’s every move would wake us up or disturb our sleep. All-foam mattresses usually do a great job with motion isolation, and so do innerspring beds with individually-wrapped coils.

Noise

Most people don’t think about noise when looking to purchase a new mattress, but over time it can become an essential factor. This category refers, of course, to how much noise your bed will make when you move around, or fool around on it.

Again, this is another thing that all-foam mattresses don’t generally have a problem with since foam doesn’t usually make noise. However, you could run into some issues with innerspring mattresses, though individually-wrapped coils do mitigate the problem at least for the first few years of use.

Best Type of Mattresses You can Get for This Price

As we’ve stated before, a $1000 budget shouldn’t be too much of a limiting factor when it comes to the types of mattresses you can expect to find. So, you should try to obtain some general knowledge on the types of mattresses that exist out there and which one is best for you. There are four main kinds of mattresses sold today, namely innerspring, latex, memory foam and hybrid.

Innerspring mattresses have a coil system inside, hence the name. These usually feel bouncier and firmer than other types of bed. If you’re looking for a firm feel, these are for you.

Latex models are also quite responsive and bouncy, but the latex allows for some cushioning as well. These beds are usually free from any toxic chemicals, and they are hypoallergenic which makes them an excellent choice for children and eco-friendly shoppers.

Memory foam mattresses are best suited for those individuals who like to feel cradled in their bed. They do an excellent job of pressure-relief and contouring. If you’re looking to prevent and alleviate pains and aches, this is the material for you.

Finally, hybrid mattresses offer a combination of innerspring coils in the support layer and memory foam in the comfort layers. This is often considered to be the best of both worlds, as the beds are cushioning while retaining the responsive and bouncy feel of an innerspring mattress.

FAQ

Q: How much should I expect to pay for a King mattress?

That’s a complicated question that doesn’t really have a ‘right’ answer. It’s kind of like asking what you should expect to pay for a phone or a TV. It depends on the specifications, brand and a bunch of other factors. In the end, it mostly depends on your needs and preferences, but you should know that you can find a good King mattress for as little as 250$.

Q: Why are most mattresses on this list made entirely of foam?

The answer to that is a combination of a couple of factors. Firstly, on this website, we focus primarily on bed-in-a-box mattresses you can order online, and those are usually all-foam. Secondly, a high-quality innerspring or hybrid mattress is likely to cost more than our $1000 budget. That’s not to say that there aren’t any good innerspring, hybrid or latex mattresses under $1000, but they are more difficult to find. Therefore there are only a few of them on this list.

Conclusion

We sincerely hope that this Buying Guide has given you all the information you need before going out and purchasing your next bed. High-quality mattresses can be quite expensive, but it only takes a bit of digging to find some low-cost solutions that can do almost everything a premium mattress can.

The crucial thing here is to find a bed that offers the proper support for your spine, neck and hips so that you can avoid expensive doctor’s visits later on in life. We wouldn’t recommend sacrificing your sleep quality in order to save up, but you don’t need to break the bank to have a high-quality bed either.
