How To Properly Make Your Bed Without a Hassle?

Every person who likes having their sleeping surface nice and tidy all day long has their own rules regarding how to properly make a bed. But the question is are they doing it right! Believe it or not, there are some guidelines that can help you with this routine of yours and provide you with the best looking and the most comfortable sleeping environment. So let’s start from the beginning.

Bed layers

First and foremost, we need to go over all the layers of a bed in order for you to understand their role and the importance of how you make them.

Base layers

When it comes to the number one bed layer, you can choose to have a dust ruffle or mattress pad. Dust ruffle or bed skirt as it is called as well is not that popular today as it was in the past. It is basically a piece of fabric that goes around the box spring in order to hide it and to keep it under the bed area away from people’s eyes. They are usually ruffled, but modern versions are more streamlined.

The mattress pad, on the other hand, is a super useful bed layer we believe everybody should have. It’s a protective cover that stands between you and your mattress and keeps it nice, clean and in good condition all the time. It will make sure the mattress doesn’t get stains from bodily fluids over time, which can be quite embarrassing, and it will keep it looking as good as new for the longest period of time.

Bottom sheet

It is important that the bottom sheet is the right dimensions, the same as your mattress, in order for it to fit the mattress perfectly. Bottom sheets often have an elastic band all around, which is extremely helpful when positioning them on the mattress.

Top sheet

On top of the bottom, the sheet goes the top sheet that will, in most cases, be the same as the previously mentioned layer. Of course, you can choose it in a different color or pattern if you prefer your bed to look more colorful.

Not everybody likes using blankets, so this layer is pretty much optional and seasonal. People will use it mostly during the winter and autumn months. Some like spreading it between the top sheet and top layer, while others prefer leaving it folded at the bottom of the bed.

Top layer

When we talk about the top layer, we refer to a comforter in most cases, but this piece of bedding can also come in the shape of a quilt or duvet. Duvet and comforter are, in most cases, very soft and cozy, and people like having them directly on their skin, while the quilt is more of decorative detail.

And the last but not the least – pillows. Even though people usually need only one or two pillows when they are sleeping, it’s quite common to place many more of them on top of the bad, again, for decorative reasons. If that’s the case, it’s just important to have a clean and sanitary place where you will put those additional pillows during the night when you don’t need them.

How to make your bed?

In order to learn how to make a bed properly, you need to follow all of these steps.

Step 1: Clear the space

In the beginning, you need to make sure everything is removed from your mattress – used sheets, blankets, pillows, literally everything. But please, do not leave the items you don’t plan to wash on the floor. Place them on top of some chair, sofa, or another piece of furniture because they will be there just temporary.

Step 2: Put the bottom sheet

Now it is important to establish which way the bottom sheet goes on the mattress, which is longer and which is shorter side. After you do that, place one corner of the fitted sheet around the mattress edge, and repeat the same procedure with all the others. It’s best to do this clockwise until the bottom sheet is in its place, well-stretched.

Step 3: Place the top sheet

If you want your bed to look nice and tidy, you should be very precise when placing the top sheet. You should spread it all over the bed, making sure both sides of the mattress are covered with an equal piece of fabric. The top sheet should hang a bit from the mattress, but not too much.

You don’t want to collect the dust or dirt from the floor with it. Some people like having a top sheet covering the complete mattress, so in that case, you will have to tuck the corners of it under the mattress edges, but others prefer leaving it just under the pillow line, nicely folded.

Step 4: Put the comforter

The next step is easy – all you have to do is to spread a comforter or a duvet on top of previous layers, making sure the edges are equally falling on all sides of the bed. Also, the upper part should be folded just under the pillows. Now, if you are using a duvet or comforter cover, you will first have to fit them nicely into this piece of fabric. A nice detail would be to pull the top sheet over the folded comforter top, so you can see the color and the pattern of it.

Step 5: Fluff the pillows

During the time you use them, the pillows can become more or less flattened and misshapen, so when making your bed, you should always fluff them a little bit. That way, they will regain their previous shape and look tidy and rich. If you have more than two pillows, you should place them the way the bigger ones are at the bottom of the bed, and smaller ones are up in the front.

Good bed habits

Make your bed every morning

Okay, we know that you believe just a few minutes more you spend in a bed are precious, but the truth is you are just prolonging what needs to happen, which usually ends up with you being late and doing everything halfway, including your bed. Change your beddings regularly

Besides the most obvious health reasons, you should regularly change and wash your beddings also because the feeling of laying down in a clean bed is simply irreplaceable. We are not saying you need to do it extremely often, the optimum is once per week, or even possibly once per two weeks if you always lay down fresh under the shower and if you didn’t sweat a lot during the night.

Invest in a mattress pad

In order to prolong the lifespan of your mattress or to make it more comfortable and suitable for you, you can always use a mattress pad. With the help of this item, you will make sure bodily fluids and sweat stains don’t leave the trail on the mattress, which could be a lifesaver in case you need to use your warranty. But also, if the mattress is too firm or if you are a hot sleeper, and it doesn’t suit you, an adequate mattress pad could make quite a difference.

What can I add to make my bed more comfortable?

If you are looking for an affordable jet practical solution that would make your bed more comfortable and more pleasant to be in, we suggest investing in a good-quality mattress pad. Also, other things you should consider are a soft and cozy blanket, some additional pillows, and nice sheets that are made from skin-pleasing materials.

Is quilt a good addition to my beddings?

We are huge lovers of quilts because they add more imagination and creativity to our sleeping surfaces. You can use it in different ways, depending on your preferences and the current season, so during the winter months, a quilt can even keep you warm. But more people use it as a decorative detail only, and in that case, you should simply fold it and place it at the lower part of the bed.

How should I make a bed with a footboard?

The majority of the process is pretty much the same as if you are to fix a regular bed without a footboard. The only difference is that you will have to lift the mattress at its bottom and tuck the sheets nicely. The cover in the shape of a quilt or comforter should reach only to the footboard.
